Aviation English2018-05-26T09:08:26+00:00

The aviation industry is set to double in size in less than two decades with more than 37,000 passenger planes in service – 40% of them in Asia – which will also make up almost half the world’s passenger traffic. There will be a global demand for 2m locally sourced flight, technical and cabin crew meaning around three quarters of that future workforce will come from non-native English speaking countries. Most of them will interact with other non-native speakers in critical passenger safety situations in an industry where English is mandated and where poor grasp of English has been proven to be the cause of air incidents and accidents – including fatal crashes.

We can provide your aviation academy and flight school with world class Plain English and Specialised English language learning brought to you by the creators of the Oxford English Dictionary –  a department of the world famous Oxford University – with results and efficacy that demonstrate an industry leading 87% learner completion rate and 92% student satisfaction rate.

Aviation English

Individuals entering aviation with a high level of proficiency in English language readily acquire the specialised vocabulary and phraseologies needed for efficient and safe radiotelephony communication

ICAO

Since 2008, the International Civil Aviation Organisation has mandated English as the language of the aviation industry and that critical passenger and aircraft safety related roles have a demonstrable mastery of English in the areas of aircraft construction & maintenance, airport management & operations, air traffic control, passenger care, flight crew & cockpit resource management. Despite this and according to the 2016 EF proficiency index, the aviation industry as a whole is still ranked as low proficiency amongst its English language workforce capability. And when cross referenced with country rankings, the markets targeted for the biggest airline growth over the next 20 years are also considered to have low and very low proficiency, hampering efforts to fill the requirement of over half a million pilots globally – with 50% across Asia.

With demand set to grow exponentially in routes, airports, fleet and human capital plus millions of dollars of investment in each aircraft and billions invested in brand, airlines will lead that demand but want to be certain they have the best talent at the controls. There has never been a better opportunity for flight schools and aviation academies & universities to grow, whilst guaranteeing that reputation for qualifying world class pilots, ATC’s and technical staff. Part of that is providing the best in class training in all disciplines and areas of specialisation to ensure they graduate as the best talent on the market. Contact us below if you’re an academy or school looking to provide world class English language learning to help your cadets and students meet the proficiency requirements and get the most out of their core CPL/APTL/ATC training.

Plain English

It is well known that before you can speak the specialist Aviation English you have to speak good English. Oxford University Press is considered the leading authority on the English language as both creators of the iconic Oxford English Dictionary and also as a department of the University of Oxford – voted the world’s no.1 university again. The supported e-learning will teach a thorough foundation and focus on plain English and its elements of speaking & listening along with reading and writing. It’s 12 modules all map to the CEFR (Common European Framework for the Recognition of Languages), which is now considered the global benchmark for measuring any language development. Once enrolled, a student is assigned to their level of English after taking a placement test and they will be supported throughout by a coach and tutor who liaises regularly through email and voice recording. Further specialised one to one coaching can also be added.

Aviation English

This highly specialised radiotelephony communications between pilot and air traffic controller, known as Aviation English, is used only in-flight. It emphasises speaking and listening skills. It has a focus on several key phrases, structure, elocution, comprehension and the use of plain English. This is because the pilot and controller cannot rely on visual clues, are only able to speak one at a time and the majority of speakers will be non-native. In addition to the core English language e-learning, there is Oxford’s brand new course for pilots and air traffic controllers, specifically designed to help prepare for the language fluency test required by the ICAO. The material has been authenticated by pilots, air traffic controllers and aviation English trainers both in English speaking countries and in countries such as Spain & Brazil, in Asia and the Middle East. As well as digital reading material, the course Audio CD includes a variety of realistic interchanges between pilots and air traffic controllers. There is also one to one coaching with an aviation English specialist if needed.
